HOTEL CHARLES

You can sense the musical spirit the minute you walk through the door.  You have entered the hallowed halls of Hotel Charles!

 

Located in Hughesville, MD, Hotel Charles holds a significant place in Southern Maryland’s history.  Originally built in 1936 by Ollie Olsen and his wife “Miz Olsen,” it boasted two rooms, two bars and two dance floors.  However, when a devastating fire destroyed much of the establishment, Ollie re-built his Hotel Charles- only this time he did it  better and stronger than before! Using brick, rather than wood, the building was declared an official emergency shelter for the Hughesville area during the 1950s.

 

It was during this time when country music legends such as: Patsy Cline, Roy Clark, Buck Owens, and Jimmy Dean graced Hotel’s stages. Till this day you can still feel their musical essence within the building’s hallowed halls. Adding to this divine spirituality is contemporary bands such as No Green Jelly Beans, and the Sam Grow Band.

 

Although the Olsen’s no longer own Hotel Charles, all subsequent proprietors have kept the building intact through-out the decades. Hotel’s current owner, Jeff Thomas, continues on with the tradition.

 

Hotel Charles still contains two rooms: The Front Room, with its 20 foot bar, holds two pool tables, and a stage where the DJ’s spin their tunes.  On Friday night,  karaoke is hosted there as well.  The Band Room, which contains Ollie's original booths and dance floor, hosts top-notch live performers when advertised. 

 

There is something for everyone at Hotel Charles. So why not get to know, and love the atmosphere that makes this establishment so memorable.

 

Hotel Charles does not promote or encourage underage drinking so please be sure to bring a valid and acceptable ID; without it you will be denied entry- after all we all “know Jeff too.”
